Re: [ARSCLIST] LP RECORD STORAGE

I completely understand space issues, as I easily have over half a
million assets (including more than 70,000 LP's, 78's and 16"
transcription discs) across all of the vaults that I'm responsible for,
but shelving on that scale requires not only the correct room layout and
shelving strategy, but also an architect and structural drawings.

>From the original posters question of "Does anyone have advice on
obtaining record storage for LPs?" I assumed we were talking rather
"personal" 5000 or less collections of LP's.

Anyone with 25,000+ items should have figured out shelving long ago,
along with a disaster plan, and an insurance waiver.

I'm also in Los Angeles, like the poster, and put more faith in the unit
I recommended over many other, cheap alternatives (including other Ikea
models) in the event of tremor/earthquake scenarios.

It's a different matter with a storage locker and 25,000 12" LPs and
smaller sizes. Every inch counts, especially when added to the girth of
the browser.

I actually PREFER the extra space, as it allows me to NOT store the
records close to or over the shelf edge, and when I'm selecting records,
there's enough room to pull selected ones ahead of the others without
pulling them over the edge.

Additionally, the front space can be used to "show off" a few records,
by leaning them up against the records that are pushed in.

The full 17" depth is also useful for storing your basic
accounting/bankers boxes.

I understand your statement, but for storing approx 2500 LP's on the
(5x5) unit as I do, I haven't found anything close in stability or
price, even if you consider the "waste" of 5".

It seems a waste of 5" of room space, 12" records on 17" deep shelves.
That's why I don't use them.

I'm not sure how these would work for 78's, but they work PERFECTLY for
LP's, 12" singles. So much in fact that they are sort of the de-facto
standard for almost any younger generation DJ with a vinyl collection.

They used to just come in the larger sizes (4x4) and (5x5) but now they
show a much wider range of sizes. I have 2 (5x5) units completely full
of LP's and they are a visually pleasant way to show off my collection.

They also come in a few different colors, and assembly is rather quick
and easy.

Hope this helps,
