That is a strange statement. 

On that basis, all anyone needs is cassette quality, or an old scratched
reissue LP on a bargain label.

The accuracy of the information on the carrier is very important. It
determines whether you can hear the details of the orchestration, or the
phrasing and expression of a pianist, or the vocal expression of a
singer.
