There is a vast literature on this subject. Most of it relates to large institutions, their great number of damaged items and the huge costs associated with recovering them.

I expect the book collector's sites will be more helpful.

I believe there is a recommended procedure for freezing books infested with
mold that will kill the mold. I'm not sure under what controls the freezing
is done, but UNC used to have a room and freezer device dedicated to
