Alcohol on shellac is the classic Vietnam syndrome. You'll kill it to save it.

You won't get it all back, but I'd begin trying to pry it out with a dental tool. The objective is not to remove it (though that would be nice) but to create a path so the stylus can track through the groove, noise and all. After that, it's between you and your computer programs.

I've just received a commercially produced acoustic 78 with what looks to be thick paint splotches on the record surface. Suggestions about removing it would be welcome. This web site http://www.soundfountain.com/amb/rc1.html says that industrial alcohol, blue spirited alcohol and turpentine are OK. Confirmation would be great.
