Yes, it was possible all the way back in 1939.  The station would just 
make a dub of the original studio-made transcription disc, although this 
would usually take a day or so to copy.  I have transcription dubs, made 
in 1939 by station KFI (Don Lee Network) in LA, hand dated one day after 
the original broadcast date, with the notation that the copy was made 
per request of Tommy Lee (the owner's son).
