Re: [ARSCLIST] Other memorable record stores

As I mentioned in a previous post, I have found some rather rare materials
in church thrift stores and at the Salvation Army resale shops. Ok, maybe
not the dumpster, but, given away with little thought to their value. Two
weekends ago I had a call from our local public library. They maintain a
store where they sell donations they don't want. Needless to say, they
don't want 78s. I went there and took a look at a collection that
contained some of the very early Columbia sets...ok, not all of them are
treasures...but...I recommended pricing...and said I would call my
collector friends so they could come by and look. The shop decided that if
they hadn't sold in a few weeks, they would mark them down to 5 cents a
disc. Many places don't see the value in putting stuff up on ebay.Thank you for this confession.I was driven away from thrift stores, about five years ago, because I could not get anything. The good records were petering out,and I learned this was because every store, had people they were saving records for.I tried to get in on it,but store after store, denied they were doing this. The dealers/pickers they saved them for had two arrangements.Either they would buy everything for say, fifty cents each, sight unseen, and the junk would be dumpstered,or they would sort through it in the back room, buy the goodies, and cut the organization a check, every Christmas.I was once lucky enough to spy a box, inside an open back room,at a Salvation Army,in 1999. I was able to duck in,and grab a few fifty cent Lps, including a VG+"Five Satins Sing",and the 1956 Dutch Philips Mozart Bicentennial 10" clothbound set.(Which I paid for.)I went in a few weeks later, and learned this was caug!

camera. This got me kicked out of every Salvation Army in town!

How much is it worth to someone to lug home 10,000 78s and put them up,
one at a time, on ebay. For some people, sure, it is worthwhile, but
consider how much one has to know about such things to make it worth their
time financially.
