Richard,

After looking online at this unit, it looks like the interface box is
not external, but fits in a 5.25 drive bay instead, with a ribbon cable
internally connecting that to the card inside. Ugly, very ugly way of
doing it. It appears to also be RCA's as connectors rather than balanced
I/O.

Sounds close to a broken shield/ground between the card and the I/O box
- but that's a guess. If you move the box around while recording, what
happens?
