An image of the label is part of the cataloguing records on the VG site.
Audio files of the discs are also attached (if the recording is in public
domain in Canada) and there are also links to artist biographies and other
information.

If you haven't checked out the Virtual Gramophone site, you should
http://www.collectionscanada.ca/gramophone/  some 14,000 (as complete as we
could make them with over 50 fields) cataloguing records, 11,000 label
scans, 4000 audio files (MP3 and RealAudio) with more being added every
month - end of shameless promo plug!

There have been several attempts to develop a comprehensive field list for
78s and cylinders including our own efforts for the VG, LC did one, and
there is a European one that I saw last summer - each has a lot of
similarities but there are differences.

Am I understanding correctly that you are suggesting that an image of the
disc label, and perhaps the run off grooves, with matrix number visable,
could be part of the catalog record?

If so, what would then be the minimal amount of information that would
need to be keyed into a system? With shellac...would Rigler Deutsch be
enough?

I also wonder about the source for digital files...broadcasts discs that
are line checks, versus off air, versus recuttings, etc...might that
suffice?
