How terrible. I deleted the conversation, but someone was noting the
distance betweenthe recording and the actual performance, and how
perhaps, there can be no definitive recording. Something like that.
Anyway, the most recent New Yorker (June 6, 2005) has an interesting
article by Alex Ross (p.94-100) along these lines. And a snazzy
illustration by Istvan Banyai that would make a very popular poster, I'm
sure.
