My thinking was that the limited dynamic range of an older recording would
limit the dynamic range of any file derived from that recording.
While I know many reject the authenticity of reproducing piano rolls
(obviously I am not one of them having issued seven volumes so far on my
label), at least those rolls were not subject to a compressed dynamic
range.
I should add that the choice of piano in making the roll transfers
concerns me greatly. We also try to take into consideration the size of
the room where the rolls were originally recorded...which was rather
small. So many variables...
