I am late on this discussion but would like to add that I've encountered only rare occasions of
mould on tapes. White substance on tapes,  for some reason, manifest itself on 2" reel mainly. I
haven't seen it much on other tape types. This is mostly a lubricant related problem that was cured
by baking. After baking the crystallized white powder is absorbed back into the tape and a cleaning
is not required.
