Im I correct in recalling that the ear hears frequency distribution
differently at different levels?  If so, does this affect this thread?

That tells us that the playback equipment is not satisfactory.
I think compression is a bad solution.

the illusion of recording and playback. It is necessary to treat the audio that is recorded by microphones. the mic's do not capture what we hear, they have their own sonic characteristics. our ears have their own filters and a brain attached ( a built in signal processing system). audio mastering is done to overcome the limits of the recording and playback medium.
