Subject: EU discusses length of copyright

It may interest sound archivists to learn that the European Union is
currently discussing the possibility of extending the copyright protection
of sound recordings from the current term of 50 years to 95 years, which is
the term in the USA, or something between these terms.

The EU Commission (DG Markt) has earlier this year issued a working paper
on the subject. The deadline for comments was October 31 2004
(unfortunately I did not notice it in time). The comments received will
soon be made public at

http://europa.eu.int/comm/internal_market/copyright/review/review_en.htm
