Re: [ARSCLIST] Gold discs manufacturers

Reading between the lines, it sounded like they were not as friendly with
Mitsui as they once were. They are closing the discs out.

Steven,

Did they happen to mention why they were closing them out? When I was
there these were a "hot" item. Granted, I last worked there about 2 years
ago...

I've just gotten off the phone with American Digital. They are closing these discs out and are not reordering them. They therefore cannot be used for future production planning.

Having spent some time at American Digital, I can vouch for the increased
ruggedness of the Klone Gold compared to the "standard" Mitsui gold. The
Klone has a thicker, heavier top-coat that, in my opinion, is far
superior
to the top coat Mitsui uses for it's own Gold discs. Why Mitsui does not
put this coating on their own CD-rs is beyond me, but I for one, prefer
the
Klone.

For reference, the Klone silver CD-r is NOT manufactured by Mitsui. Only
the Golds are outsourced to MAM. Last I heard, the silvers were being
manufactured by CMC Magnetics, but this could very well have changed
since
I
was there.

Happy friday,

This isn't exactly another manufacturer, but Klone, which seems to be a private label of American Digital (www.klone.com and www.american-digital.com) has a gold CD which is advertised as being more rugged than MAM-A. The irony is that Klone CDs are *made by* MAM-A.
They're
a little more expensive, claim to have extra protective surfacing to
increase ruggedness, and claim to have a 300-year lifetime. I don't know
if
there's any evidence, anecdotal or otherwise, which verifies these
claims.
I
*can* tell you that I've bought MAM-A CDs from American Digital at very
good
prices, and that their deliveries are reliable. They have T-Y CDs, but no
gold ones.
