Folk Music on the Air:
An Informal History from the Collections of the
American Folklife Center and the Recorded Sound Division
of the Library of Congress

The ephemeral but ever powerful medium of radio played a crucial role
in popularizing American folk music. Matthew Barton, of the American
Folklife Center, will present broadcast highlights of the 1930s and
1940s, when performers such as Leadbelly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White,
Pete Seeger, Burl Ives, the Golden Gate Quartet, Aunt Molly Jackson and
many others got their first national radio exposure. Many of these
programs were written, produced or hosted by Library of Congress
employees Alan Lomax and Nicholas Ray (who later went on to direct the
film Rebel Without a Cause and many others).
