[ARSCLIST] Fair Use Guidelines re. serving Sound recordings online

Here at the Brandeis University archives, we are updating our online finding
aids for a collection of early electronic
music recordings/performances. (Information about these finding aids is
available at
http://library.brandeis.edu/specialcollections/collections/soundrecordings.html.) I
had thought it might be fun to include a few brief samples of the recordings
online, but of course, I am concerned about copyright issues. Here are some
of the facts that create the context for this case.

* Most recordings were created at the Brandeis University Electronic Music
Studio by several prominent composers such as Alvin Lucier, Ernst Krenek,
Luciano Berio, and John Cage. Many of these recordings are the only known
copies that are available to researchers.
* Number of recordings: 70
* Most recordings took place between 1961-1968.
* The recordings were originally made on 1/4" reel-to-reel tape but have
since been restored and reformatted for research use.
* We own the CDs. We do not own intellectual copyright.
* The recordings are not published elsewhere.
* Most of the recordings vary from 10 minutes to several hours in length.
* Any excerpt that I might post online would be no longer than 30 seconds.

I would appreciate any feedback that the list is able to provide.
