Re: [ARSCLIST] BBC show on History of Sound Recording

The Library of Virginia is pleased to announce the successful completion
of an NHPRC grant to preserve and reformat selected sound recordings
from the WRVA Radio Collection.

In partnership with the Cutting Corporation and with funding from the
NHPRC, the Library of Virginia reformatted almost 318 hours of sound
recordings from the 1930's to the 1990's. From broadcasts of political
speeches and events to news, game shows, music, and human interest
stories, these sound recordings offer a unique perspective of Virginia
during the 20th century.

Each of these recordings have been cataloged individually in our
Archives and Manuscript Catalog at http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whatwehave/
as well as in OCLC WorldCat. A complete listing of the WRVA sound
recordings, along with other records of the station, can be found at
http://ead.lib.virginia.edu/vivaead/published/lva/vivadoc.pl?file=vi0056
5.xml through the Virginia Heritage Database, a union database of
finding aids of archival and manuscript collections in special
collections and archives throughout Virginia.

To listen to clips of some of these sound recordings and learn more
about WRVA and the history of radio in Virginia, visit an on-line
exhibition entitled Radio In Virginia at
http://www.lva.lib.va.us/whoweare/exhibits/radio/index.htm.

An important result of the project was the experience gained by the
Library of Virginia in the handling, managing, and preservation of sound
recordings. This grant has enabled a traditionally textual archives to
better care for these overlooked, neglected, and underutilized
resources. A bibliography of selected articles, books, and websites
relating to the preservation of sound recordings has been compiled.
Anybody interested in receiving a copy please contact me off list.

Thanks, Jay
