but Lawrence Lessig is the current American
evangelist of the public domain
his website regularly discusses copyright
law http://www.lessing.org
especially when it comes to the
tricky bits of tracking down former
copyright owners and what is currently
covered by american copyright law.
Additionally

and the creative commons website provide
free documents for copyrighting recordings
in various different manners:

All activist sites to be honest, but all of interest
to anyone trying to preserve media of the last century.
