Since the locale is Southern California, you have an easy and practical solution. Check with the rental outfits in Hollywood for availability (and cost) of a one-week rental. That will be gear intended for transport and kept in alignment.

I am in Southern California. My primary deck - a Studer A807 - is on wheels
but transportable only by tethering in a truck. My backup quarter-track
deck is a lower-end TEAC which is out on loan to a friend. Have the student
contact me at 310-477-7969 if the rental agency does not work out and I'll
see if I can get your student and my friend together to work out details.
Finally, another friend in the business of maintaining audio gear may have
one he can lend for a week.
