File sharing OK in
Canada
On Wednesday, March 30, 2004, Justice Konrad von
Finkenstein ruled in Federal Court that downloading and uploading files on the
Internet is not an infringement of copyright (in Canada). The decision was
announced in the Ottawa Citizen for April 1st (not a joke), but I have not seen
it reported elsewhere. The music industry will probably appeal the
decision.
A two-hour CBC radio program, Cross Country Checkup, will
be devoted to this subject from 4 to 6 pm EST tomorrow, Sunday April 4th. Those
who are interested can listen live (CBC Radio One) if they are close to the
border. Those who are not can listen on the web by going to:

Live.
Those who cannot get the program live at all can listen
later by going to the same site and clicking on Audio (in
the left hand box), which will take them to an archived copy of the
program.
