-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You are invited to join us next week for the Texas Chapter of the
Association for Recorded Sound Collections' 2004 Spring Meeting

Chapter member Charles Waters, Jr. will present:

"Anatomy of a Cover: The Story of Duke Ellington's Appearance on the
Cover of Time Magazine"

Duke Ellington was the subject of the cover story of the August 20,
1956 issue of Time magazine. Chapter member Charles "Chuck" Waters will
explore in detail the story behind the story - its significance, how it
came about, its relationship to Ellington's appearance at the Newport Jazz
Festival seven weeks earlier, and the background of the portrait by Peter
Hurd reproduced on the cover.

The presentation will include a showing of the mysterious promotional
film made in connection with this particular issue, as well as slides of
Peter Hurd's sketches and other cover material never before seen in public.

Here are the particulars:

Date: Wednesday, March 3 from 7-9 PM

Location: Houston Community College Central Campus, 3517 Austin St. (just
east of Main and south of Holman) - the meeting will be held in the Recital
Hall (Room 115) of the Fine Arts Center

Cost: FREE!

Directions: Approach Austin St. from Alabama St.; turn north on Austin
from Alabama; then go one block and turn right; then make an immediate left
into the parking garage. There's plenty of free parking in any space that
doesn't have a reserved sign on it. The parking garage is connected via a
covered walkway to the Fine Arts Center. Once parked, just go through the
short walkway (on the north side of the garage) and enter the FAC. Proceed
to Room 115, which is just to the left of that entrance.

Interested parties are welcome to attend a short business meeting at 6:40.
We will conduct our annual election of officers and discuss upcoming programs.

Hope to see you there!
