Re: [ARSCLIST] Video degeneration

Esther,

There are a number of resources which address the issue of videotapes
afflicted with sticky shed syndrome. For example, consult the Videotape
Preservation Fact Sheets on the Association of Moving Image Archivists Web
site:
http://www.amianet.org/publication/resources/guidelines/videofacts/intro.html.
Fact Sheet #6 discusses common tape problems, including gummy, sticky tapes
like yours. You may also want to check out the links on the CoOL video
preservation topic page: http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/bytopic/video/.

Many endorse the baking or drying treatment for sticky tapes; others say
this procedure (especially baking) should only be used as a last resort.
The AMIA listserv archives are a trove of opinions and advice on this
matter: http://www.amianet.org/amial/archive.html.

In any case, it sounds like some video reformatting is in your future.

Good luck,

Hannah

Greetings;

Could someone point me to information about dealing with video tapes that
are turning gummy and sticking in machines? Thank you in advance for your
guidance. Esther.
