Couple of things....  First of all, and to the detrement of my cred, I do a bit
of sidework as a DJ.  Technics 1200s are the industry standard for this sort of
work because of the quick tork (and the fact that they're built like tanks), but
I'd hardly recommend them for capturing archival material.  You'll want a
belt-drive system so as to cut down on motor noise.  At our lab we're using a
Thorens TD-160 (a German belt-drive table from the 80's), but that's largely
because I donated the table from my personsal collection for the time being.
Either way, with a quality stylus, I'm comfortable with its capabilities for
now.  I'll leave the details to others because it gets pretty hairy from here
and I'm usually six and one half-dozen the other on issues like this....
