It's possible to import the records into CatME, but the procedure is
difficult, the process is slow and the size of record sets is in practice
limited to 2000 records, 4000 at most. Lots of hassle.
For records you obtain in a batch from EBSCO or any other source--OCLC
WorldCat Collection Sets comes to mind--it's much better to use MarcEdit,
written by Terry Reese of Oregon State. See
http://www.onid.orst.edu/~reeset/marcedit/html/
MarcEdit also allows you to count, delete, add, append, replace & otherwise
modify particular fields, subfields, indicators or strings while in batch
mode--i.e., you can change a thousand or a hundred thousand records all at
once in the exactly same way. You can also edit records individually. And
there are nifty extra features too. Want to locate the 10 records out of a
thousand that DON'T have a 245$h or an 050$b? A MarcEdit plug-in can find
them for you.
MarcEdit takes raw MARC files, imports them into eye readable format so
that you can do your editing, then exports them as raw MARC again--with all
leader and directory information recalculated to reflect the editing
changes you've made. It's fast and it's accurate, the help files help and
it's free.
