I would agree that access to some collections should be provided through
finding aids, not MARC records. Non-commercial and unique recordings (like
Karl's Houston Symphony example) are best handled this way. But I think it
is a mistake to provide access to commercial through inventory lists,
finding guides etc. Nobody uses the ones we've got, but they do use our
online catalog. Despite MARC's (and AACR2's) flaws and book-centric bias,
MARC records work reasonably well for sound recordings and serve most of
our patrons.
If a library can't afford to do MARC cataloging of it's holdings of
commercial recordings, it shouldn't be collecting them.

There are other questions regarding use. Some collections seem to be
better served by finding aids.
