Re: arsclist CD Envelopes / Spindles / Gold CD Alternatives

Hi, Alyssa,

In a very, very unscientific study of about 300 bulk-purchased CDs vs several thousand jewel-cased CDs, I would say that there is more likelihood of a write failure from the bulk-packed CDs. I've always used the Mitsui gold CDs in their individual jewel case. Of course, the bulk-packed CDs have been Mitsui silver and Klone silver.

I think the only place where bulk-packed CDs make sense is in mass duping operations, where you can put 50-100 in the automatic machine. BUT for taking out one or two at a time even from the "cake safe" type box, it's an invitation for trouble in my opinion.

If you're paying more than a buck for a Mitsui Gold in jewel case, contact me off-list and I'll give you some places to get them.

By the way, I've avoided Taiyo-Yuden since I switched away to Mitsui and improved my playability rate in various audio players, but apparently they are making a gold CD that is NOT related to Mitsui, and I'm wondering if you or anyone has used it extensively for a "second" CD to be on the safe side.

Cheers,

Richard

Thanks for all your suggestions; I'm sticking with the jewel cases. Speaking
of which, do you find there are more unusable CDs when you buy them by the
spindle, because in theory, they're all laying with direct contact on
themselves, waiting to scratch themselves up.

Just looking at alternatives to bring down the cost as I like to buy the
gold HHB or Mitsui CDs.
