but I haven't tested it.

Nor have I, but I shall. The advantage of open source is substantial for archiving, of course, so even if FLAC proves less efficient or less convenient it may be preferable to MonkeysAudio. Shorten is proprietary and I would therefore consider it unacceptable or at least highly undesirable.
