If that doesn't work, pick up a small, inexpensive preamp (Radio Shack has one for about $30) and use that between TT and computer.

Those preamps have such a lousy sound to them that I sometimes wonder if they even attempt to apply the RIAA EQ curve to the signal or if they simply amplify the signal as is.
