POSITION: Senior Archivist
                     The University of Georgia Libraries - Richard B.
                     Russell Library for Political Research and
                     Studies (Athens, Georgia)

PURPOSE AND SCOPE:

The Richard B. Russell Library for Political Research and Studies is a
department within the University of Georgia Libraries, which reports
to the University Librarian and which functions as a center for the
study of post-1900 Georgia politics and public policy in both the
state and the nation.  Although the papers of the U.S. Senator Richard
B. Russell are the cornerstone of the Library, acquisitions include
the papers of former U.S. Secretary of State Dean Rusk, other U.S.
congressmen, judges, state governors and legislators, the records of
state political and public policy organizations, and the files and
cartoons of journalists.  

The Senior Archivist is expected to be involved in the planning,
implementation, and move of materials for the Special Collections
Building.

The Russell Library staff consists of the Director, three archivists,
and two staff and is responsible for the acquisition, preservation,
and processing of permanent historical records according to archival
standards and procedures and for providing reference assistance to a
variety of patrons.  The Senior Archivist is a member of the
Libraries' faculty and reports to the Director of the Russell Library.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manages the processing of archival collections by administering all
processing activities; supervising, coordinating and participating
with all projects; preparing accession records, inventories and
finding aids for all collections; and formulating goals and priorities
for processing.

Administers preservation program by developing and supervising all
preservation activities for the Russell Library.

Provides basic archival education by training and supervising
processing staff in the arrangement, description and preservation of
original materials.

Develops records management schedules with offices and organizations
by participating in donor staff interviews, appraising office
functions and records created and consulting with co-workers.

Develops a multi-year plan in preparation for the move of materials to
the new Special Collections Building by identifying means to organize,
transport, and relocate materials.

Provides appraisal of electronic records in terms of content and
context by assessing relationship to textual records in the collection
as well as materials in other collections, staying abreast of trends
in preservation and access issues relating to the medium, and
consulting with co-workers.

Collaborates in the development of automated access to archival
holdings by engaging in the creation of MARC records for item-level
and collection-level records using APPM and AACR2 and maintaining
awareness of trends in automating finding aids. 

Provides reference service to the University community and the general
public by participating in staffing the department's reference desk,
by developing and maintaining knowledge of collections within the
library and by providing tours and instruction as needed.

Participates in general departmental administration by contributing to
the planning and developing of special projects, functions and
exhibits.

Provides administrative assistance to the department head by assuming
other similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Maintains an awareness of current trends in the archival field by
participating in professional activities.

Maintains flexibility and awareness of changes in the department and
organization and contributes to the team effort by assuming other
similar duties and responsibilities as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

ALA-accredited MLS, or subject master's degree with equivalent
combination of education and experience (e.g., ACA archival
certification); minimum of five years experience in an archival
setting; Working knowledge of historical research methodology and
experience with standard bibliographic tools; Knowledge of MARC, APPM,
and AACR2 for original cataloging of archival materials; Strong
organizational ability; Successful supervisory experience; Effective
oral and written communication skills; Ability to establish and
maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, donors, and
patrons; Records management experience preferred; Familiarity with
XML, SGML, and HTML and especially application of EAD/DTD desired. 

BENEFITS:  Standard benefits package includes life, health and
disability insurance and mandatory participation in the state or
optional retirement system, and 21 days annual leave, plus 12 paid
holidays.  Salary minimum:  $38,000, commensurate with experience.
