Memorial: Stephen D. Shapiro

Stephen D. Shapiro, Conservator of Prints and Drawings, died 24 July, 1984 from a sudden heart attack, at the age of 36. Stephen was well known in the San Francisco Bay area for his activities in the conservation profession. He was founder and partner of Daedalus, a private paper lab, and had held many offices in the Bay Area Conservation Guild. He had been an active member of both Guild and WAAC. He organized the FAIC Public Lectures for the San Francisco A.I.C. meeting.

Stephen favored the role of devil's advocate and was sure to make contrary arguments known in any situation. Blind acceptance of circumstances, particularly in conservation politics, was never a problem when he was present.

Stephen is survived by his wife and partner, Anita G. Noennig, who is continuing their business of paper conservation and framing. He also leaves a son, Jason Shapiro, for whom an education trust fund has been established in Stephen's memory. Those of us who were Stephen's friends will feel his loss greatly as he was a generous and loving individual. The conservation community will miss his contributions and positive influence.
