The Conservation Center at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art has recently been awarded a grant of $20,000 by the Armand Hammer Foundation to study the effects of encapsulation upon the surface texture of paper during long term fluctuations of temperature and humidity.

The Conservation Center's Imaging Team will seek to determine, by computer assisted image processing techniques, whether or not rigid encapsulation, such as would be the case for recto/verso display of drawings encapsulated between plexiglas or other rigid plastic, has a detrimental effect upon the surface character of Old Master, hand-made drawing paper. This study is the conclusion of an earlier research project sponsored jointly by NASA and the California Institute of Technology on the applications of image processing to art conservation.

The image processing analysis will be shared between the Conservation Center and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.
