Yankee machine

A type of papermaking machine that utilizes one large steam-heated cylinder for drying the newly formed sheet of paper instead of numerous smaller cylinders. The wet paper web is pressed against the surface of the cylinder and is usually held in place by a canvas drier felt as the cylinder revolves. The Yankee drier produces a machine-glazed finish on the side next to the cylinder. The wet end of the machine may be either a cylinder or Fourdrinier machine and may have any number of presses or auxiliary driers of the conventional type. The characteristic features of the Yankee machine are its large cylinder (ranging from 9 to 15 feet in diameter) and its very smooth surface. (17 , 67 )
