The residue of burned wood, which contains
potash-a very strong alkali. The alkali is
recovered by leeching the ashes with water, and
either it or the ashes themselves are used in some
areas of the world, in a mixture with indigo, to
render the hair of a hide brittle and easily
removed by scraping. (130 )
