volute
A decorative ornament, often found on
heads-in-medallions rolls, which consists of a
large curl (spiral) in roughly volute form at one
end, the other end having a small curl turning in
the opposite direction. The volute was always used
in pairs. Its use as a single tool, with a reverse
partner, was common in English restoration
bindings, often pointillé. (250 )
