velvet wrapper binding
A form of protective covering for book covers,
designed to be wrapped over the edges of the book.
Used in medieval times, the velvet wrapper binding
is frequently represented in Flemish paintings of
the 15th century. The wooden boards, with no
preliminary covering, are covered in velvet cut so
as to extend above and below head and tail, and
beyond the fore edge of the upper cover. The edges
of the velvet were sometimes finished with
embroidery of red floss and silver. (347 )
