valonea ( vallonea, valonia )

A vegetable tanning material obtained from the dried acorn cups and beards of the Mediterranean (valonea) oak, Quercus aegilops, and allied species. The cups contain tannin in the amount of 25 to 31%, while the beards usually contain 40% or more. Valonea is of the pyrogallol class of tannins and produces a leather of firm texture and light color. It also deposits considerable bloom because of its relatively high content of ellagitannic acid. It has a fairly high natural pH (3.6) for a pyrogallol tannin, as well as a moderately high acid and salts contents. See also: VEGETABLE TANNINS . (175 , 306 )
