toluene

A colorless, refractive, aromatic liquid hydrocarbon (C 7 H 8 ), obtained from coal-tar light oil by cracking, by heating toluic acid with lime, and by other processes. It is used as a solvent to remove pressure sensitive tape from paper, in finishing leather, and in removing grease from leather. (173 , 235 )
