tied down ( tied bands )

A simple binding ornamentation consisting of lines impressed along either side of each raised hand, which continued onto. and were joined part way across, the sides. A small floral or leaf design was used to terminate the lines. The lines were either in gilt or blind and were executed with a pallet. The decoration is derived from the early technique of TYING DOWN the bands. Also called "ties." (156 )
