thymol
A colorless, crystalline compound (C 10
H 13 . OH), obtained from origanum and
other oils, or prepared synthetically by the
hydrogenation of piperidine, obtained from
Eucalyptus dives and E. piperita. Thymol is very
slightly soluble in water, and is soluble in
alcohol and chloroform. It is used as a
preservative in paste and also as a fungicide. It
can he applied as a solution in alcohol or
vaporized for use as a fungicide. (237 )
