tab index

A form of the index used when the ordinary cut INDEX is not feasible, such as with loose-leaf bindings. The set of 24 tabs (I and J are generally combined and X is omitted) are prepared in one strip of material, which is glued along half its length, leaving splits for attachment to the leaves. The letters are printed or blocked on the strip and the individual letters are then separated. The tabs are attached to the leaves in a complete series along the fore edge from head to tail (and usually from front to back) with the letters projecting. (276 )
