The purpose of lining the spine is to support it and to impart a certain degree of rigidity, while still maintaining the necessary flexibility for proper opening; consequently the weight and stiffness of the spine lining material is of considerable importance. A term used incorrectly with reference to the strengthening or stiffening of the area between the boards of the covering material of case bindings. This lining is more appropriately called the INLAY (1) .
