specific gravity
The ratio of the weight of an object to the weight
of an equal volume of pure water at its maximum
density, which is at 4° C. Because paper,
leather, cloth, etc., do not lend themselves well
to measurement of specific gravity, density is
used more often as the reference in describing
these materials.
