sodium thiosulfate
A salt (Na 2 S 2 O
3 ). prepared by treating a solution
containing sodium carbonate and sodium sulfide
with sulfur dioxide, or by boiling sodium sulfite
with sulfur. It is used extensively in photography
because of the ability of its solutions to
dissolve silver halides, and as an anti-chlor when
sodium hypochlorite is used in bleaching archival
papers. It is also used extensively in the chrome
tannage of leather. (144 , 306 )
