sodium hypochlorite

A salt (NaOCl). formed, together with the chloride, by the reaction between chlorine and cold dilute sodium hydroxide. It is used as an oxidizing agent in bleaching archival materials. Its chlorine content, however, which is extremely difficult to remove from the paper, makes it detrimental to paper permanence.
