smut tape

A tape used to prevent the offset of ink when pages are being numbered in a numbering machine. When numbers are printed on both sides of the sheets, the second number will cause the first to offset on the table, so that when the next sheet is laid in place it will be smeared. Smut tape prevents this by taking up the ink as it offsets and then moving before the next impression is made, so that a clean surface is brought into position for every sheet. (339 )
