A finishing tool. the face of which is covered with carbon black, which is deposited on the leather to darken the impression in blind tooling a book. Originally, the carbon was deposited by holding the tool over a smoking flame; today, however, carbon paper is usually used to blacken the tool. (83 , 152 )
