1. The outside surface of the upper or lower cover of a bound book. 2. The paper, cloth, or other material used of the sides of a book. 3. The half of cowhide, either in full weight or as split. Cowhides are frequently cut in half down the backbone for ease of handling, so that they may be hung in the tanning pits without being folded etc. 4. The left- or right-hand of a piece of movable type when the printing surface is uppermost and facing the viewer. The front is the belly and rear the back. (102 , 156 , 363 )
