scouring

1. The process of removing the sediment of tannin particles which become fixed in the grain of the skin following a prolonged tannage. The machine used in scouring is similar to the regular unhairing or fleshing machine, except that the cylinder has carborundum cemented in place in lieu of blades. The speed of the machine is also much slower. See also:SCUDDING , 2.
