scales binder

An anonymous London binder active from before 1460 to about 1491, so called because one of the stamps he used most frequently represents a pair of scales. The scales binder used decorative stamps on his bindings and is believed to be the only English bookbinder to have used both the stamped- and cut-leather methods of decoration. (167 , 236 )
