salicylic acid

A crystalline phenolic acid (C 7 H 6 O 4 ), soluble in alcohol, ether and hot water, but less soluble in cold water. At 200 C. it decomposes into phenol and carbon dioxide. It is used in the manufacture of dyes, and as a preservative for paste. (142 , 371 )
